I was out exploring the area with a friend today when we passed a lot full of rusty VWs with a couple of Hondas and miscellaneous things mixed in. On the other side of the building were three or four cars that had obviously been sitting there for at least 10 years, and probably much more. But off to the side, all alone, I noticed an aesthetically perfect (as in no visible damage aside from rust due to neglect) 914 just begging for me to take it home. I doubt it would start without some significant work, but the front seemed to be at a normal level so I'd assume it at least still has its engine and everything. Here's the place on Google Maps. The 914 is the brown one near the bottom right corner of the building.

(side note: scroll a little bit down and to the right; there's what appears to be an abandoned development project due to building on swampy land for some dumb reason, but those gravel roads are just begging to be hooned. I promise a photoshoot there as soon as I finally get the Escort)

I can't begin to express how much I want to! I just don't know if it's possible to get my hands on the thing at all...

Might want to cross-check serial numbers before you hoon it out. If it's a 914-6, that's quite a nice little prize.

Definitely. Problem is I can't have two cars here and there is almost nowhere to store it. It's possible I could convince my one friend who lives off-campus to let me put it in her backyard or something, but that's very wishful thinking. On top of that, I have no idea whether it's even for sale. It may not have a title or anything, either.

You know the 'Porsche 914' was sold as a VW outside America? The proper Porsche ones had six cylinder engines and good amounts of power, but were too expensive compared to the 911 to sell well. The cheap four cylinder ones were supposed to replace the Karmann Ghia, and were very slow.
In a way they're really my kind of car even so: great handling, by reputation, so really good for slow-car-fast, and normally I like ugly cars. Objectively, though, it's almost certainly not worth saving. The only reason to do it would be because you enjoy working on a project, because, cliches aside, a first-gen MX-5 is better in every way including cost.

It's beautiful though. That's my only motivator.

There's a 914 under a tarp at 2082 Trenton Street, West Monroe, LA. Been there several years and they just change out the tarps when they start to get tattered. I once thought it had 914-6 GT flares on it but from this Google Streets photo I'm mistaken. Pan to the right to see.

The 914 is mid engine.

It would be a boring world if we all thought the same. I'd definitely class it with the ugly-but-interesting cars, although it's more functional than frivolously and outrageously ugly like, idunno, the Multipla.

there's one down the street a little ways from me, too:

While I could get past the mismatched body panels, the rust scares me and I really don't need a project car - I'd much rather be driving than wrenching.

Porsche 914s have gone up quite a bit in value, and the combination of rust and half-assed small block Chevy conversions steadily diminishes their numbers. So if you can hold onto one for several years, a restoration could be profitable. The real question is whether one would have more fun driving a Miata or wrenching on an old Porsche/VW...

I clicked down the street a bit, and whoa. I am more excited by that Cougar.

Somehow I don't think that car has been sitting for years, though. :)
